Box for good behaviour
A new pilot scheme by Sport 4 NRG to reward exemplary behaviour by young people has been such a success that it’s being extended.
Since December, Sport 4 NRG, Thanet District Council’s diversionary sports programme, has been taking young people to The Grange Boxing Club in Birchington for expert boxing training on Friday lunchtimes as a reward for their exemplary behaviour during the school week.
This positive incentive has led to an increase in the young people’s attendance at school, as well as an increase in their standards of behaviour, and respect for teachers and fellow pupils.
Because of the success of this pilot scheme, the Friday lunchtime sessions have now been made accessible to even more pupils from the Marlowe Academy, in the hope that it can have the same sort of impact on more young people.
To thank the Grange for offering the use of their facilities and expert coaching for nothing for a special pilot scheme, Sport 4 NRG has donated 15 top of the range speed ropes to them.
James Gregory, from Sport 4 NRG said: “A lot of the young people tell us that they will give up smoking after their first session which is great news, and they keep coming back with smiles on their faces, so we know we’re having a positive impact on their lives. We are offering them routine, structure and discipline, and they seem to love it, as it’s something that many of the young people with whom we deal with, lack. The trainer doesn’t go easy on the young people who attend, he pushes them right to the edge, but they seem to love it!”
